Kartiki Gonsalves is a Sony Artisan, one of the first women selected in India as a Sony Imaging Ambassador for the Sony Alpha series as a natural history and social documentary photographer. She is an Indian Natural History, Social Documentary photojournalist/ filmmaker currently based out of Bombay in India.
Early Life
Gonsalves was born on November 2, 1986, to Priscilla Tapley Gonsalves and professor Timothy A. Gonsalves, a computer scientist. She was raised at Ooty, a town located inside the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Nilgiris area of Tamil Nadu, together with her younger sister Danica.
After graduating from the Dr. G. R. Damodaran College of Science in Coimbatore in 2007, she continued her education, concentrating on photography.
Career
Gonsalves is a photographer and documentary filmmaker who has operated cameras for Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. She is the director of the Netflix documentary The Elephant Whisperers, which was made by Guneet Monga. 30 minutes from Gonsalves’ upbringing, the 41-minute documentary was made at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp.
During the 95th Academy Awards on March 13, 2023, the movie took home the trophy for Best Documentary Short Film. The film was the first from India to receive the honor.
Gonsalves is an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
