Australian cricketer Megan Schutt (born January 15, 1993) has been a member of the national team since 2012, contributing as a medium-fast bowler. She first debuted in 2009 with the South Australian Scorpions and has been with the Adelaide Strikers since 2015. She made history by becoming the first Australian cricket player to ever take a hat trick in a Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) match.
Early Life
Schutt’s parents, Brian and Sue, raised her in what she calls a “loving family” in Adelaide. Schutt says, “I’m 99 percent my dad; I have my mum’s eyes, but that’s it,” and “I thank [my dad] for all my sporting-ness.” He claims, however, that he was never a particularly talented athlete.
Schutt grew up in a humble home in Hackham West, a southern suburb of Adelaide, with her older sister Natalie (with whom she shared a bedroom) and younger brother Warren. Although she enjoyed school and did well academically, she “wagged a bit” while attending Hackham West Primary School and later Wirreanda Secondary School.
Schutt was a regular at the cricket games that the local kids of Hackham West played in the silent residential streets. She was asked to sub in for a Seaford club match when she was only 11 years old. She was out on the first ball of the game, but she responded by taking a wicket with her first delivery. A member of a new all-female team also noticed her and invited her to join the squad. The Flinders University Cricket Club scouted her after seeing her play for the other team and decided to bring her in. Then, when she was 13 years old, she relocated to Sturt, where she played alongside Shelley Nitschke.
Schutt moved up through the South Australian state pipeline from the under-15 to the under-17 and under-19 teams.
She was “fluky good” at cricket when she was a teenager, but it took her a while to really enjoy the game. She was called up to play junior level football for a short while when she was 16 and tried her hand at boundary umpiring, but she quickly went back to her first love, cricket.
